The Skarn-W is a knife built around a single design conviction: the wharncliffe blade is the most capable everyday cutting geometry, and it deserves better materials than it usually gets.
The wharncliffe profile — flat edge, straight spine, tip that drops to meet the edge at the very end — is purpose-built for controlled, precise cuts. Where a drop point disperses the tip, the wharncliffe concentrates it. Where a tanto divides the grind, the wharncliffe keeps it unified. It's the blade shape of choice for fine work: opening packages cleanly, food prep, detail tasks, anything where tip placement and edge control matter more than aggressive geometry. The 2.87" length keeps it compact and legal to carry, while the 0.13" thickness gives it enough presence to handle real work without feeling dainty.
The steel is Böhler M390 at 60±2 HRC — a powder metallurgy stainless steel that sits among the best production blade steels available anywhere. Outstanding edge retention, excellent corrosion resistance, and a satin finish here that lets the quality of the grind speak for itself rather than hiding it under stonewash or coating. The handle is machined titanium, light and rigid, running on ceramic ball bearings with a crossbar lock for fast, ambidextrous one-handed operation.
The Skarn-W was co-designed by Fabian Hobbelen — a Dutch designer with a background in product design whose work consistently prioritises function-first thinking. The result is a knife where every decision has a reason, and you feel it the moment you pick it up.
At $284.95, it's one of the most capable and considered M390 titanium folders available in Australia at this price.
